Here are my photos from Day 1 and Day 2 of our short excursion to Nikko.
On the first day we showed up at Nikko Station and walked the main road from there to our hotel (roughly 25 minutes, but we took many detours for shopping and food). We then went to the complex of multiple shrines and temples that comprise part of the Nikko National Park and World Heritage area.
I personally spent most of my time in Toshogu Shrine, which is (among other things) where Tokugawa Ieyasu (who unified Japan and started the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan for 200+ years) is buried. I'd been to Nikko before but Toshogu has recently finished a massive decade-long renovation, so it was cool to see it newly re-gilded and re-painted.
On Day 2, Dana, Isaac, Yuri, and I went on a hike to Senjogahara, which is a field of marshlands between mountains that has some unique plant and animal wildlife. The hike ended with the truly impressive Yudaki Waterfall.
